To experience Manola Court (aka the Sachs Apartments) is to enter into the mind of one of the pioneers of Southern California modernism. Its architect, R.M. Schindler—a contemporary and colleague of Frank Lloyd Wright and Richard Neutra—designed the 16-unit complex in the 1920s for his friend, Herman Sachs, a bon vivant, muralist, and designer who left his mark on the civic landscape of Los Angeles through his work on important public buildings, including Union Station and City Hall. Manola Court, Sachs’s home and studio—and the social hub for a vibrant Silver Lake creative community—is now a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument. A meticulous new restoration pairs Schindler’s principles and vision with amenities that bring the best of the 21st century to this magnificent property. The unit, which has been thoughtfully designed and exquisitely appointed by Platform Home, offers visitors an opportunity to experience life in one of Schindler’s explorations of community living. Manola Court, like the nearby Bubeshko Apartments, is said to be an interpretation by Schindler of a hillside village in Greece. Its buildings showcase Schindler’s interest in the thoughtful interplay of indoors and outdoors; his signature work with glass, wood, and plaster; and his skillful use of the steep terrain. Tasteful amenities—Aesop bathroom products, new Fisher and Paykel appliances, native live plants, and Schindler designed soffit lighting throughout the apartment—complete the guest experience.

Fees from short-term stays support research into rare blood-related diseases through an innovative new charity model devised by Paul Finegold, owner of Manola Court, to honor his late wife, Gitu Bhavnani.
